Drawing attention to the increase in the number of children with autism spectrum disorder, Istanbul Okan University Hospital Child Neurology specialist Assoc. Prof. Dr. Canan Kocaman drew attention to the role of children meeting the screen too early in the disease.
Explaining that she has become more frequently encountered with children with this disorder, Kocaman said the following:
“0-3 years of age is a critical period for child brain development. The mystery of our lives is hidden in this period. Because 80 percent of brain development is completed in this period. Unlike adults, the child's brain has the ability to plasticity (reorganization) and more inter-neuronal connections. Children's brains learn and develop by playing and spending time with us through imitation, not by passively watching screens. They look like hypnosis, they don't understand any details and the fast frames in the background that we can't see tell the child's brain 'Stop developing! The most common story I hear is that we made them watch screens because we couldn't get them to eat, especially during the transition to supplementary food. I even met a family who made a CD recording of a fast-changing image like an advertisement and fed it to their children.”
